Dr. Berns' practice focuses on patients with chronic kidney disease, end stage kidney disease on dialysis, kidney stones and severe hypertension resistant to treatment. His practice philosophy emphasizes preventive measures for all types of kidney disease. He is director of nephrology at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, clinical professor of medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago, and is president and managing partner of Lakeside Nephrology, a single specialty group practice in Metropolitan Chicago. Dr. Berns is medical director of Fresenius Medical Care Rogers Park Dialysis Facility and is a member on the Board of Advisors of the American Society of Nephrology. He is a member of the Nephrology Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is past chairman of "Renal Weekend" sponsored by the American Society of Nephrology, which is an annual meeting held in Chicago each Spring.
